Expert Pest Management for Cannabis Grow Operations and Retail Facilities
Commercial cannabis cultivation and production facilities can attract a variety of pests and plant diseases due to the presence of moisture, nutrients, and protected growing environments. These conditions can create ideal habitats for insects and other pests that may damage plants, contaminate products, and disrupt daily operations.
Maintaining a pest-free facility is critical for protecting crop quality, maintaining compliance standards, and ensuring smooth business operations. Pest infestations can impact yields, harm plant health, and potentially lead to costly production delays or facility damage. For these reasons, professional pest management plays an important role in safeguarding commercial cannabis operations.
Drawing on extensive industry experience and pest management knowledge, our specialists have identified the most common pests that cannabis growers and retail facilities should monitor to keep their operations protected.

Common Pests That Can Affect Cannabis Production Facilities
Fungus Gnats
Fungus gnats are small flying insects, typically measuring about 2 to 4 mm in length, with slender legs and delicate wings. These pests commonly breed in damp soil and moist organic materials. Their larvae mainly feed on fungi present in moist soil, though some species can also attack plant roots, making indoor cannabis growing environments especially vulnerable.
Consistently moist soil conditions promote fungal growth, which serves as a primary food source for fungus gnats. These damp environments also create ideal breeding grounds, increasing the risk of infestation in cannabis production facilities. Adult fungus gnats usually remain close to their breeding areas, often hovering around plants and growing media, which can lead to contamination risks for cultivated crops.
Aphids
Aphids are a common pest found in many cultivated crops and can easily infest cannabis growing facilities in large numbers. These insects are small, soft-bodied, and pear-shaped, typically pale green in colour and measuring around 4 to 8 mm long. Aphids may appear with or without wings and feed on plant sap while damaging plant tissues.
As they feed, aphids produce a sticky substance known as honeydew, which can accumulate on leaves and surrounding surfaces. Large infestations can weaken plants and significantly affect crop health and productivity. Because aphids reproduce rapidly, early detection and professional pest management are essential to prevent large-scale infestations in cannabis cultivation environments.
Spider Mites
Spider mites are extremely small pests—often about the size of a pinhead—which makes them difficult to detect during early infestations. These mites commonly attack cultivated crops and can spread quickly throughout cannabis production areas. They feed by piercing plant tissues and extracting sap, usually from the underside of leaves.
Heavy infestations can result in serious crop damage, including reduced plant growth, leaf discoloration, and eventual plant decline if left untreated. One common indicator of spider mite activity is the appearance of small speckled patterns or stippling on leaves. Fine webbing along stems or under leaves can also signal the presence of spider mites within the growing area.
Crawling Insects
Various crawling insects—including ground beetles, earwigs, sowbugs, centipedes, crickets, spiders, caterpillars, and springtails—can enter cannabis facilities from the surrounding outdoor environment. These pests typically gain access through small cracks, gaps under doors, utility openings, or unscreened vents and windows.
Many of these insects are small and may be more active during nighttime hours, seasonal changes, or extreme weather conditions, making them harder to detect. Some pests, such as earwigs, may feed directly on plants, while others can become a nuisance or pose potential health concerns if encountered by employees or customers in retail environments.
Protecting cannabis facilities from pest activity requires proactive monitoring and professional pest management strategies designed specifically for commercial growing environments.
